About Yellow Fever Vaccination

The yellow fever vaccine helps protect against yellow fever. This is a virus spread by mosquito bites in parts of Africa and South and Central America. Some countries ask for proof of the vaccine before you enter.

Who it’s for

  • People aged 9 months or over
  • People travelling to an area with yellow fever, or to a country that asks for a certificate
  • Not suitable if you have a weakened immune system or a thymus problem
  • Not suitable if you have an egg allergy

Common questions

Is it free on the NHS?

No. It is likely you will have to pay for the yellow fever vaccine. It is only available from designated yellow fever centres.

How much does it cost?

Each pharmacy sets its own price. You can see it when you choose a pharmacy.

How many doses do I need?

One dose is given. A booster is only needed for a small number of travellers who may still be at risk.

How long does the certificate last?

Since 11/07/2016, the yellow fever certificate is valid for life. It becomes valid 10 days after the vaccine.

What are the side effects?

Reactions are usually mild and short-lived. They include muscle pain, headache and a low fever, often 5 to 10 days after the vaccine. Get medical help straight away if you have a fever, yellow skin or eyes, or feel confused.

Can I have it if I am over 60?

People aged 60 or over have a higher risk of rare serious side effects. They should only have it if the risk of yellow fever is real and cannot be avoided.
