About Occupational Health Vaccination

Occupational health vaccinations protect people whose work puts them at risk of certain infections. They also help protect patients and colleagues.

Who it’s for

  • People aged 16 or over
  • Healthcare workers and students in direct patient care
  • Laboratory and pathology staff
  • Other workers whose job needs a vaccine

Common questions

Which vaccines are available?

These include hepatitis B, hepatitis A, combined hepatitis A and B, tetanus, diphtheria and polio, MMR, chickenpox, rabies, typhoid and MenACWY. Which you need depends on your job.

How much does it cost?

Each pharmacy sets its own price. You can see it when you choose a pharmacy.

Will my employer pay?

Employers have a duty to arrange and pay for vaccines staff need for work. Ask your employer or occupational health team first.

Do I need a blood test after hepatitis B?

Yes, if you are at risk through work. A blood test 1 to 4 months after the course checks you are protected.

What are the side effects?

Common side effects are pain, redness or swelling where the injection was given, mild fever and tiredness. These usually settle within 1 to 3 days.

Can I get a record for my employer?

Yes. A record of your vaccination can be sent to your employer or occupational health department if you ask.
