About Hepatitis B Vaccination

The hepatitis B vaccine helps protect against hepatitis B. This is a virus that affects the liver. It spreads through blood and body fluids. You need a full course for the best protection.

Who it’s for

  • Adults and children at higher risk of hepatitis B
  • People travelling to places with a higher risk of hepatitis B
  • People who need it for work, such as healthcare workers
  • People who choose to be vaccinated
  • Not suitable if you already have hepatitis B

Common questions

How many doses do I need?

Most people need 3 doses over 6 months. A faster course can be given if you need protection sooner.

How much does it cost?

Each pharmacy sets its own price. You can see it when you choose a pharmacy.

Is it free on the NHS in Scotland?

All babies get hepatitis B protection as part of the 6-in-1 vaccine. If you only need it for travel, you may have to pay.

What are the side effects?

Most side effects are mild and do not last long. They include soreness where the injection was given, tiredness, headache and a high temperature.

How long does it last?

Protection may last 20 to 30 years. Boosters are usually only needed for some people, such as healthcare workers whose blood test shows low protection.

Do I need a blood test after?

Healthcare workers need a blood test 1 to 2 months after the course to check they are protected.
