  • People with no spleen or certain immune conditions

Common questions

How many doses do I need?

Most people need 1 dose. Babies under 12 months need 2 doses, at least 4 weeks apart.

How much does it cost?

Each pharmacy sets its own price. You can see it when you choose a pharmacy.

Who can get it free on the NHS in Scotland?

All young people in S3 (around 14 years old) are offered it. If you missed it, contact your local NHS immunisation team to check if you can still get it.

When should students have it?

Have it before starting university or college, ideally at least 2 weeks before. Protection develops 2 to 3 weeks after the vaccine.

What are the side effects?

Side effects are usually mild. They include pain, redness or swelling where the injection was given, fever, headache, muscle aches and feeling unwell.

Can the vaccine give me meningitis?

No. It is not a live vaccine and cannot cause meningococcal disease.
