About Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)
A UTI is a common infection of the bladder, kidneys or the tubes connected to them. A pharmacist can check your symptoms and, if suitable, supply an antibiotic (nitrofurantoin) for a bladder infection.
Who it’s for
- Women aged 18 to 64 with symptoms of a bladder infection
- Not suitable if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have kidney problems, a catheter or UTIs that keep coming back
- Men and children should speak to their GP
- Contact your GP practice urgently if you have a very high temperature, feel hot and shivery, or are confused or drowsy
- Get help the same day if you have pain in your side or back, feel sick or are being sick
Common questions
How much does it cost?
Each pharmacy sets its own price. You can see it when you choose a pharmacy.
How long does a UTI last?
Symptoms normally pass within 3 to 5 days of starting treatment.
How long is the antibiotic course?
The course lasts 3 days. Finish the whole course, even if you feel better.
What are the side effects?
Common side effects include feeling sick, diarrhoea, loss of appetite and headaches. Your pee may turn dark yellow or brown. This is harmless. Take it with food or milk.
Can I get UTI treatment on the NHS at a pharmacy?
If you live in Scotland or are registered with a GP practice there, you can use NHS Pharmacy First Scotland. UTIs in women are on its list of conditions. You can book the private service if you prefer, or if the NHS service does not cover you.
When should I go back?
Go back if your symptoms last more than 3 days or get worse. See your GP if they come back after treatment.
