About Period Pain (Dysmenorrhoea)
Period pain is common. It is usually cramps or aching in the tummy. If simple painkillers have not helped, a pharmacist can check if a prescription-strength painkiller (mefenamic acid or naproxen) is suitable for you.
Who it’s for
- Women aged 18 to 65 with period pain
- When paracetamol or self-care have not helped enough
- Not suitable if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have had a stomach ulcer or bleed, or have asthma made worse by anti-inflammatory painkillers
- See a GP if you have heavy bleeding, bleeding between periods, pain at other times in your cycle, or pain that affects your daily life
Common questions
How much does it cost?
Each pharmacy sets its own price. You can see it when you choose a pharmacy.
How do I take the tablets?
Take them with food. Start when the pain starts, or the day before your period is due. Take them for no more than 5 days each cycle.
What else can help period pain?
A hot water bottle and gentle exercise can help. You can also try pain relief such as paracetamol or ibuprofen.
Can I get period pain treatment on the NHS at a pharmacy?
If you live in Scotland or are registered with a GP practice there, you can use NHS Pharmacy First Scotland. Period pain is on its list of conditions. You can book the private service if you prefer, or if the NHS service does not cover you.
When should I see a GP?
Speak to your doctor if the pain affects your day-to-day life. Get a review if the tablets have not helped after 3 cycles.
