About Sore Throat
Sore throats are common and usually get better within a week. Most are caused by a virus or bacteria. A pharmacist can check your throat, may do a quick throat swab test, and, if needed, supply an antibiotic (penicillin).
Who it’s for
- Adults and children aged 5 and over
- Most sore throats do not need antibiotics, even if caused by bacteria
- Call 999 or go to A&E if you have difficulty breathing or swallowing, are drooling or have a high-pitched sound when breathing
- Contact your GP practice if your symptoms have not started to improve after a week
