About Lyme Disease

Who it’s for
- People aged 12 or over with a Lyme disease rash after a tick bite
- Young people aged 12 to 17 with a single rash and no other symptoms
- Not suitable if you are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Not suitable if you have symptoms beyond the rash, such as face drooping or joint swelling
Common questions
What does the rash look like?
It is red and circular and may look like a bull's-eye. It usually appears 3 to 30 days after a bite. It often grows over days or weeks. Around 1 in 3 people with Lyme disease do not get a rash.
How much does it cost?
Each pharmacy sets its own price. You can see it when you choose a pharmacy.
How is it treated?
With a 21-day course of doxycycline. Finish the full course even if you feel better.
Are there side effects?
Doxycycline can make your skin more sensitive to the sun. Avoid strong sun and sunbeds until you finish. Take it with a full glass of water while sitting or standing.
How do I remove a tick?
Use a tick removal tool or fine tweezers. Grip the tick close to the skin and pull steadily without crushing it. Clean the skin with soap and water.
When should I get urgent help?
Get urgent help if you have face drooping, a racing heart, chest pain, a severe headache with a stiff neck, or a painful red eye.
