About Sleep Problems
Insomnia means having trouble getting to sleep or staying asleep. It affects around 1 in 3 people in the UK. A pharmacist can look at what is affecting your sleep, give advice and, if suitable, supply melatonin for short-term sleep problems or daridorexant (QUVIVIQ) for long-term insomnia.
Who it’s for
- Adults aged 18 and over
- Medicine is only considered if sleep problems are bad enough. Lifestyle changes come first
- See a GP if snoring, pauses in breathing, restless legs, pain, low mood, anxiety or a new medicine may be the cause
- Not suitable for melatonin if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have epilepsy
Common questions
How much does it cost?
Each pharmacy sets its own price. You can see it when you choose a pharmacy.
What can I do to sleep better?
Keep the same waking time every day. Switch to decaf after midday. Keep screens and phones out of the bedroom. Get out of bed if you are awake for more than 20 minutes. Keep your bedroom dark and quiet.
Do sleeping tablets work?
Medicine can work in the short term, but it can also make insomnia worse.
How long does treatment last?
Melatonin is for short-term sleep problems, under 3 months. Daridorexant is for insomnia that has lasted 3 months or more. You will be reviewed within 3 months.
Can I drive after taking it?
Do not drive or use machines after taking melatonin. Allow about 9 hours after daridorexant before driving.
When should I see a GP?
Contact your GP practice if better sleep habits have not helped, or poor sleep is affecting your daily life.
