About Back Pain
Back pain is common and often starts for no clear reason. It is rarely caused by serious disease or damage. A pharmacist can check your symptoms and, if suitable, supply a prescription-only anti-inflammatory medicine (naproxen).
Who it’s for
- Adults aged 18 and over with back pain from strain or movement (mechanical back pain)
- When simple measures have not helped enough
- Not suitable if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have had a stomach ulcer or bleed, or have severe kidney, liver or heart problems
- Not suitable if you take blood thinners or other anti-inflammatory painkillers
- Phone 111 urgently if you have numbness or pins and needles between your inner thighs or genitals, or new problems with your bladder or bowel
Common questions
How much does it cost?
Each pharmacy sets its own price. You can see it when you choose a pharmacy.
How long does back pain last?
Most back problems should improve within 6 weeks. The biggest changes usually come in the first couple of weeks.
What can I do to help my back pain?
Keep active. It is an important part of your recovery. Pain relief can help you move more easily. You can use heat or ice, but never put them straight on your skin.
Can I get back pain treatment on the NHS at a pharmacy?
If you live in Scotland or are registered with a GP practice there, you can use NHS Pharmacy First Scotland. Backache is on its list of conditions. You can book the private service if you prefer, or if the NHS service does not cover you.
When should I see a GP instead?
Contact your GP practice if your pain does not change after self-care, is not affected by movement, or is worse at night. Phone 111 if you have had a new, serious injury in the last 7 days.
