About Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction (impotence) is when you cannot get or keep an erection. Treatment can usually help. A pharmacist can check if a medicine is safe for you and, if suitable, supply sildenafil or tadalafil.

Who it’s for

  • Men aged 18 and over with erection problems
  • Not suitable if you take nitrates for chest pain, such as GTN
  • Not suitable if you have had a heart attack or stroke in the last 6 months, or have severe heart disease
  • See a GP if erections are painful, you have had erection problems all your life, or these medicines have not worked before

Common questions

How much does it cost?

Each pharmacy sets its own price. You can see it when you choose a pharmacy.

Can I get erectile dysfunction tablets from a pharmacy?

Yes. Sildenafil can be bought from a pharmacy for erection problems after speaking with a pharmacist.

How long do the tablets take to work?

Take sildenafil about 1 hour before sex. Take tadalafil about 30 minutes before sex. You still need sexual stimulation for them to work. Do not take more than one tablet in 24 hours.

What are the side effects?

Common side effects of sildenafil include headache, dizziness, a blocked nose, an upset stomach and blurred vision. Get help straight away if an erection lasts longer than 4 hours, or you suddenly lose your sight.

Why do erection problems happen?

Occasional problems are often caused by stress, tiredness, alcohol or drugs. If it happens often, it may be linked to high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, depression, anxiety or hormone problems.

When should I see a GP?

Contact your GP practice if you have had symptoms for more than a few months.
