About Travel Diarrhoea

Travellers' diarrhoea is the most common health problem for travellers. It is usually caused by germs in food or water. This service can supply a standby antibiotic, azithromycin, to take if symptoms become severe.

Who it’s for

  • Adults aged 18 or over
  • People travelling to higher-risk areas, such as most of Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Latin America
  • People at higher risk of severe illness or going to remote areas
  • Not suitable if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have heart rhythm problems

Common questions

How do I use a standby course?

Carry it with you. Only start it if symptoms become severe. Take it once a day and stop when symptoms settle, for up to 3 days.

How much does it cost?

Each pharmacy sets its own price. You can see it when you choose a pharmacy.

How can I prevent it?

Wash your hands after the toilet and before eating or making food. Take care with food and water. This helps but does not fully protect you.

What should I do if I get diarrhoea?

Most cases are mild and get better on their own. Keep eating and drinking. Use oral rehydration solution if symptoms are more severe.

When should I get medical help?

Get help straight away if you have a fever of 38°C or more, or blood or mucus in your stool. Also get help if symptoms do not improve within 3 days.
