About Weight Management

Obesity is a long-term condition where you have too much body fat, which can affect your health. Weight Management offers support and, if suitable, weight loss medicine alongside a healthy diet and regular activity.

Who it’s for

  • A BMI of 30 or over is classed as obesity; 25 to 29.9 is overweight
  • Health risks can start at a lower BMI for people from some family backgrounds, such as Asian, Chinese and African-Caribbean

Common questions

How much does it cost?

Each pharmacy sets its own price. You can see it when you choose a pharmacy.

What are the side effects of weight loss injections?

Feeling sick, constipation and diarrhoea are very common when you first start or when your dose goes up.

How can I manage feeling sick?

Eat slowly and stop when you are satisfied. Eat smaller meals more often. Avoid fatty, fried, spicy or strong-smelling food. Sip clear fluids and do not lie down soon after eating.

Do I still need to diet and exercise?

Yes. You need to eat a balanced diet with fewer calories and be active regularly while taking weight loss medicine.

Can I get weight loss injections on the NHS?

Depending on your BMI and other health conditions affected by your weight, you may be able to get weight loss medicine on the NHS. Your GP can advise you. Your GP may also suggest your local health board weight management programme.
