About Cold Sores
Cold sores are small blisters on the lips or around the mouth. They usually clear up without treatment within 7 to 10 days. For adults who get cold sores often, a pharmacist can supply antiviral tablets (aciclovir) if suitable.
Who it’s for
- Adults aged 18 and over who get cold sores again and again
- You have a cold sore now that started within the last 5 days, or new sores are still forming
- Not suitable if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have severe kidney problems, or have a weakened immune system
- Contact your GP practice if a cold sore has not started to heal within 10 days
Common questions
How much does it cost?
Each pharmacy sets its own price. You can see it when you choose a pharmacy.
How long does a cold sore last?
A cold sore usually clears up without treatment within 7 to 10 days.
How do I take the tablets?
Start as early as you can, ideally at the first tingle. Finish the full 5-day course, even if it gets better. Drink plenty of fluids.
Are cold sores contagious?
Yes. Avoid close contact with others until your cold sore has completely healed and gone.
Can I get cold sore treatment on the NHS at a pharmacy?
If you live in Scotland or are registered with a GP practice there, you can use NHS Pharmacy First Scotland. Cold sores are on its list of conditions. You can book the private service if you prefer, or if the NHS service does not cover you. On the NHS, antiviral tablets are usually from a GP, for cold sores that are very large, painful and keep coming back.
